  7. Hello MPEG fans,
  8.  
  9. I am happy to announce the first release of my free, software-only
  10. MPEG audio player "maplay". The player was developed for Sun SPARCstations,
  11. Silicon Graphics Indigo machines and DECstations with the GNU C++ compiler,
  12. but the program should also work on other platforms.
  13. Features currently implemented include:
  14. - playing of layer I/II MPEG audio streams on SPARC 10 machines with
  15.   the dbri device and on Indigos
  16.   (both devices and MPEG are capable of producing CD-quality audio output)
  17. - it supports all modes (single channel, stereo, joint stereo and dual channel)
  18.   and bitrates (except free mode currently)
  19. - decoding of streams to stdout into a raw pcm format for further format
  20.   conversions to .au, .wav etc.

  22. The sourcecode and a short MPEG audio stream for testing has been posted to
  23. alt.binaries.multimedia on 2/21/94.
